call their friends and relatives in swing states. >> we have live team coverage. kimberly spoke to supporters. >> for more, the speech to a packed house inside the auditorium. >> reporter: jessica, president obama told supporters, he needs help. he told 100 supporters at a private dinner here at the billy graham civic auditorium to be almost excessive over the next 29 days to reach out and talk to anyone they know in battleground states who could help them get reelected. then he entered that packed auditorium. the energized crowd of thousands greeted him with a standing ovation and the president spoke for about 25 minutes, telling supporters the future of the nation is at stake, saying his opponent, mitt romney, is already discounting 47% of the population and will fight for republican interests, not the nation. >> i'm not fighting for red values or white values or black values or latino values or gay

or straight values. i'm fighting for american values. they belong to all of us. san francisco. we are not as divide as our politics would suggest. >> reporter: more than 6,000 people paid anywhere from $100 to $20,000 a piece to see the president. president obama laid out accomplishments like the affordable care act, the repeal of don't ask don't tell, tax cuts for the middle class and jobs creation. he also talked specifically about last week's debate saying mitt romney's facts don't hold up. >> a few nights ago, suddenly a guy pretending to be mitt romney stood on a stage next to me. and said he is his plan. he is just going to pretend it doesn't exist. what $5 trillion tax cut? i don't know anything about a $5

trillion tax cut. don't pay any attention to that tax cut behind the curtain. >> reporter: the crowd did boo at any mention of mitt romney and the president had some advice. he said don't boo, vote. reporting live in san francisco, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. more details of the president's money trail. mr. obama touched down at 1:40 this afternoon at sfo. since then he's raised nearly $4 million. that's a conservative estimate. he health three separate fund-raisers. the first at san francisco's intercontinental hotel where he raised $1 million. a relatively intimate gathering. 25 people who paid $45,000 for time with mr. obama. from there he traveled one mile away to the bill graham civic. he had dinner with 100 support here's paid $20,000 a plate. fish tartar and duck. finally an estimated 6,000 people attended tonight's concert with grammy winner john

auditorium. >> he was extremely enthusiastic. he wowed the crowd up. extremely good eloquent words. i've never heard somebody speak so great. to hear that is once in a lifetime. >> he was saying in there that people were saying he had to be harder and he was saying that the debate the other night was really fun to sell something. he is not trying to sell anything. he is trying to keep the country moving. it takes time. we didn't get in trouble in four years. we got in trouble in 12 years. >> reporter: security around the bill graham stadium was tight and those who did tan the concert did d a bit of walking to get. there there are also road closures and traffic was congested as drivers tried to find alternate routes. california highway patrol and san francisco police did work with the secret service and were, as you can imagine, all around here, very highly visible around the area. live in san francisco tonight. nbc bay area news. >> as the president makes big money in the bay area, his

killing. >> she sacrificed herself by spending the first 10 to 12 years after the kids. everybody treats her like everybody's mother. >> reporter: her body was found in her home by a neighbor. her husband was the one who asked the neighbor to check on her when she failed to pick him up from the airport. >> we know the victim was stabbed and we don't have a weapon at this point so we thought there might possibly be a blood trail. they asked the fbi to help come in and solve this crime because their investigative unit dealing with homicides is so small. agents were at the home this afternoon, gathering evidence. >> we're still for the vehicle. when it left here, it had an idaho license plate to the best of our knowledge. we wanted to let the community know the plate may have been removed. >> reporter: while police are working on solving this murder, a large community is doing what it can to cope with the loss.

. he could face hundreds of severe in prison. in june, you remember, a jury convicted jerry sandusky of sexually abusing ten boys. don't expect an apology. today an unrepentant sandusky released a statement to a college radio station maintaining his innocence. >> they can take away my life, they can make me out as a monster, they can treat me as a monster but they can't take away my heart. in my heart, i know i did not do these alleged disgusting acts. >> an attorney for one of sandusky's victims said, quote, i keep hoping he'll do the right thing and take responsibility for his actions but it appears that day will never come. it is an eye opening discovery. not in a rural forgotten area. instead in one of the most notable cities in the bay area.

an investigation has uncovered higher than expected cancer rates in mountain view. our investigative reporter began digging into the story about six months ago now a lot of people are asking serious questions. >> reporter: we asked california's cancer registry to take a look at the area to see if there were more reported cases of cancer than scientists would normally expect among the population living there. those results are now back. and they show a higher incidence of certain types of cancer. a group known by scientists as nonhostage kin lymphoma. >> here's the report. >> my goodness. >> we delivered the news that many residents living in this neighborhood long suspected. >> my first reaction was, i was just really extremely sad thinking about the neighborhood people. >> reporter: after exhaustive research and analysis of three decades worth of health data,

california's cancer registry found the higher than expected number of people living here with nonhostage kin lymphoma during the years, 1996 to 2005. >> i was hoping that the statistics would not show this to be true. when you find out it is true, why did we wait so long to have to finds this out and why aren't those responsible polluting parties held more accountable to even delivering that message to people that could be impacted. >> reporter: the cancer registry counted the cases of cancers among people living in three different u.s. census blocks, vowed surrounding what is known as the super fun site. then compared those rates to similar populations in other areas. the super if you said site dates back to 1988 when the epa discovered tons of a toxic cleaning solvent called tce. . it had leaked or been dumped into the ground by both the

military and the then young semiconductor industry located right outside the gates of moffett field. >> cancer is a concern for all of us. >> for snipes, he is chief of surveillance and research. >> we focused on cancers that in the past, there has been some report of association between exposure and cancer. those three cancers were cancer of the kidney, cancer of the liver and nonhodge kin's lymphoma. though there was no rise in liver cases, they did find a statistically significant elevation for nonhongkin lymphoma. there were 31 cases. nearly twice the number that would have been expected. >> i can fully hg why the residents in the region might be concerned. that's why we are careful with analysis as we can. >> reporter: did it surprise

you? >> it makes you wonder. >> reporter: he has lived here for decades. he has become a communicate activist and resident expert on the toxic tce in his communicate. >> somebody should be at it. did we miss something? because as you said, this hike is significant. we just don't know enough to blame it on the tce. we do know that all that tce needs to be cleaned out. >> reporter: the registry did find good news. the rate of nonhodgekin lymphoma has been trending at normal levels. still, he says the unexpected number of cancer cases has the attention of health officials around the state. >> the cancer registry will continue to monitor the area as the cases come in. >> it didn't take polluters. it took investigative reporting. now we want to find out more. >> reporter: jane horton wishes she would have had this

information sooner so she and others could have made more informed decisions about living here. >> at least people should be alerted that they're in a risk zone for this and what the symptoms are so they have an opportunity to be more aware. maybe something could be found sooner than later. it is just wrong. you know? it does make me mad. >> reporter: as you heard, this is very important california's cancer registry will continue to monitor the health of residents living and around this area to make sure there is not@another spike in the number of cancers there. the santa clara county health department has been notified and has put the area on its watch list. the epa has been notified and is continuing its clean-up efforts, but it could be decades before this entire super fund site is completely clean up. we'll be monitoring this story as well. >> thank you. some valuable reporting. if you have a tip for our investigative unit, please give us a call at 888-996-tips.

you can send us an e-mail directly to the unit. let's check in with our meteorologist. >> we're seeing the temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s. no showers around the bay area right now. and likely not so much around the day tomorrow. it is wednesday with our latest computer updates. thing could get a little interesting around the bay area. 59 in san francisco. 57 in san jose. and we do have the onshore winds that will help push in some patchy low clouds into tomorrow morning. the satellite radar view, pretty interesting here offshore. you can see the bright white cloud tops about 200 mile offshore. the lightning detection we're picking up thunderstorms around the center of low pressure. the showers for now on the west coast. over the next 24 hours, we'll see this low which is off to the west of eureka move closer toward the bay area. by this time tomorrow night, you may start to see some showers around the santa cruz mountains. and eventually, by the time we get to wednesday, that will be our best opportunity for

showers. late thursday into friday, this system heads into southern california and another one will drop in on us as we go toward friday night and early saturday. perhaps giving us one more chance for seeing showers before we kick off the weekend. tomorrow evening, you could see around the santa cruz mountains. maybe a few scattered showers. watch what happens here. right around this time tomorrow night. a few more showers in the santa cruz mountains. wednesday morning, starting to see more shower activity across the central bay and south bay. that will continue as we go toward wednesday afternoon. and by wednesday evening, the moisture starts to head out of bay area. but wednesday could be the main event this week in term of the scattered showers for the bay area. tomorrow's highs, low 70s for the south bay. 72 degrees. 68 around santa cruz toward the east bay, we'll see highs mostly in the mid 70s. patchy low clouds for the morning and clouds building up south of livermore. in the north bay, the areas north of santa rosa may see an isolated shower on tuesday. the best bet for showers, especially for the north bay. that will come in at times for wednesday.

here in our three-day forecast, the temperature not changing a whole lot. wednesday does seem to be the best bet for showers. wednesday, a bit of a break. one more to deal with as we get toward friday evening. especially for the north bay. that will weaken as it slides south. by saturday morning, the skies should begin to clear. we'll see the temperatures climbing into the mid 80s. sunday into monday, and of course, with the a's in town hosting the games in oakland, it looks like partly cloudy skies. no showers around oakland for tomorrow, wednesday, most of that should be in the south bay. we'll keep our fingers crossed on wednesday. game, plural. >> we're going with games. >> jessica is crossing our fingers. >> back in a moment.
